East Texas Triathletes
History
In 2002, JD Mitchell had an idea to start a triathlon club as there were a
small group of East Texas area triathletes who
kept frequently meeting at local events. Before
the start of the 2003 season, Rick Uribe, after
gaining some support from area retailers,
organized the athletes, designed a uniform, and
registered the new club with USAT Triathlon. The
focus of the new club, Roadkill, with a roster
of about 20-25 members, was building interest in
triathlons through a developmental juniors
program, and through exposing runners and
cyclists to the exciting world of multi-sports.
In 2007, Duke Gill, after
aquiring a USAT "Club in a Box" kit,
re-organized the club and the first meeting of
the East Texas Triathletes was held on November
10, 2007. At that meeting the new club
constitution and regular club meeting dates were
established.
East Texas Triathletes hosted
their first triathlon (and the first in our
area) benefitting Hospice of East Texas on
September 20, 2008, having been postponed one
week due to Hurricane Ike.
In May 2008, the East Texas
Triathletes became a non profit organization.
